DOHA FESTIVAL CITY MTB TRAILS
Architrail were commissioned to provide consultancy services to develop entry-level mountain biking facilities at the Doha Festival City shopping mall in Doha, Qatar.
Following initial consultation with the client and user groups, a concept was developed and presented to the board. The brief was to create multiple mountain biking skills trail sections, distributed around a jogging track around the perimeter of the mall. This concept was refined further before moving onto a detailed design stage.
The project involved close collaboration with the project’s architects and engineers and was particularly complex, given the incredible array of services and infrastructure surrounding the mall. The client needed the track to be zero maintenance so Architrail specified resin bound aggregate as a surface course. Due to the local climate, the client was keen to include water features, so we included a 30m long mist tunnel to help cool cyclists down, as well as a river splash section with downhill and uphill waterfall sections. Sections of boardwalk were included, using non-timber materials that would not warp, melt or degrade at temperatures of 50+C.
Construction was undertaken by a local contractor, with no experience of mountain bike trail construction. Architrail made regular construction supervision site visits in order to train the contractor and ensure construction matched up to the detailed design.
